Event: CCCC Wikipedia Initiative – June Events & Announcements

Greetings from the CCCC Wikipedia Initiative!

We are thrilled to announce our June programming. For our final month of the 2022-23 CCCCWI Speaker Series, we are proud to present two exciting events with a focus on Juneteenth and Pride Month. You will hear from scholars discussing their research and have the opportunity to write related scholarship into Wikipedia.

Updates

  • Thank you to those who attended our April CCCCWI Speaker Series event! Dr. Christopher Castillo hosted a great discussion on the racialized emotions that circulate in professional academic spaces (including writing programs, graduate programs, and departments) that must be addressed as part of anti-racist efforts. Check out the event recording here.

  • We’re moving away from Twitter! By the end of the month, our Twitter account (@WP_Writing) will be deactivated. As part of our ongoing efforts to contribute to a more safe and equitable knowledge ecosystem, and as we’ve noticed members of our community leave the site, we have decided to do the same and take our outreach work elsewhere. We hope to continue expanding our network with our new email group service. Please share the link to join here.

This month, we are working to prioritize the inclusion of topics related to how race, gender, and history affect knowledge production about the arts of rhetoric, composition, and literacy by practicing inclusive citation practices and strategies for integrating knowledge communities across space and time.

[Two-Day Event!] CCCCWI Speaker Series: Wikipedia Editing for Knowledge Liberation

Day One: Friday 6/9 @ 3:00pm – 4:30pm ET

Day Two: Saturday 6/10 @ 3:00pm – 4:30pm ET

Register here (limited to 20 participants per day)

Join Dr. Alexandria Lockett for a two-day exploration of how Wikipedia editing affects knowledge production about the arts of rhetoric, composition, and literacy. She will provide plenty of hands-on support and resources throughout the event.

On Day 1, Dr. Lockett will deliver a presentation that addresses three main topics: the emergence of new technologies and data, inclusive citation practices, and strategies for integrating knowledge communities across space and time. After the talk, participants will be trained on how to edit Wikipedia by Savannah Cragin, the CCCC Wikipedian-in-Residence. There will be opportunities to improve and create Wikipedia articles related to pivotal scholars and scholarship on rhetoric, composition, and literacy.

On Day 2, all participants will be able to begin or continue editing an article(s) of their choice, as well as identify specific projects and practices that they plan to integrate into their teaching, research, and/or community engagement.

CCCCWI Speaker Series: Queer Activism in Rhetoric and Writing Studies

Friday 6/30 @ 1:00pm-2:30pm ET

Register here (limited to 20 participants)

Join Erin Green, a graduate student at the University of Maryland studying abolition in literacy and composition studies, and Dr. Elise Dixon, an assistant professor of English and the writing center director at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for a conversation about contextualizing their research with activists, the ever-growing anti-LGBTQ legislation, and the general state of queer activist research.

After the talk, participants will be trained on how to edit Wikipedia. There will be opportunities to improve and create Wikipedia articles related to pivotal scholars and scholarship on queer activism in rhetoric and writing studies.
