Located 36 miles east of Atlanta on Emory’s original campus in Oxford, Georgia, Oxford College immerses first- and second-year Emory students in a small liberal arts campus community as part of their transition to college. As a community of teacher-scholars, we are seeking a colleague invested in the liberal arts who will teach rhetoric and writing courses as well as mentor undergraduates through advising, undergraduate research, and other work. The teaching load is 3-3, class sizes are small (16 for first-year writing), and my colleagues collegial.

Assistant Professor of English – Rhetoric, Composition, and Writing Studies, Tenure-Track

Emory University’s Oxford College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor of English in Rhetoric, Composition, and Writing Studies starting Fall 2024. We seek a teacher-scholar invested in the liberal arts who will teach our first-year writing course, first-semester Discovery Seminar, and undergraduate rhetoric and writing courses, as well as mentor undergraduates through advising, undergraduate research, and other work. The teaching load is three courses per semester. In addition to teaching, successful candidates will be committed to ongoing scholarly research, preferably with the potential to involve or mentor students in undergraduate research, as well as service to the Writing and Communication Program, General Education Program, and beyond.

Desirable areas of primary specialization include, but are not limited to, cultural rhetorics, the rhetorics of an ethnic and/or historically marginalized group, transnational rhetorics and globalization, comparative rhetoric, or an applied area of writing and rhetoric, such as medical rhetoric, environmental rhetoric, professional writing, or technical writing, combined with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion. We welcome secondary interests in composition pedagogy, theory, and history, rhetorical theory and history, multimodal composition, oratory, public rhetorics, digital rhetorics, multilingual writing, writing across the curriculum, writing program administration, or empirical research methods in rhetoric and writing.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Rhetoric, Composition, and Writing Studies, or a related field, by August 1, 2024.
  • Demonstrated ability in teaching rhetoric and/or writing.
  • Demonstrated potential for successful research and publication.
  • Commitment to service to the institution, discipline, community, and/or students beyond the classroom.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and ability to communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus.
  • Demonstrated commitment to liberal arts education.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Primary specialization in cultural rhetorics, rhetorics of an ethnic and/or historically marginalized group, transnational rhetorics, comparative rhetoric, or an applied area of writing and rhetoric combined with a focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Secondary interests in composition pedagogy, theory, and history, rhetorical theory and history, multimodal composition, oratory, public rhetorics, digital rhetorics, multilingual writing, writing across the curriculum, writing program administration, or empirical research methods in rhetoric and writing.
  • Experience teaching first-year writing.
  • Experience teaching rhetorical theory.
  • Experience advising and/or mentoring undergraduates.
  • Demonstrated potential for creating new courses and development of existing curricula, such as for Discovery Seminar and/or for the Rhetoric, Writing, and & Information Design minor.
  • Potential to contribute to experiential learning curriculum (e.g., undergraduate research community-engaged learning, and/or global learning).
  • Potential to contribute to the Emory Arts and Humanistic Inquiry initiative.
