Job Announcement: Visiting Faculty of First-Year Writing

Visiting Faculty of Writing. The Department of Writing at Grand Valley State University seeks to fill a full-time (9-month) Visiting Faculty position beginning January 4, 2024 and continuing through April 28, 2025. The ideal candidates will focus their careers on teaching general education first-year writing courses and on continuously developing their professional expertise as writing instructors. A PhD, MFA, or MA in Rhetoric/Composition, Writing, English, or closely related field is required by time of employment, and graduate coursework in rhetoric and composition is desired. Candidates need to have expertise and experience in teaching college composition; strong communication and interpersonal skills, such as the ability to interact with others with respect, empathy, and cultural humility; creativity and flexibility; and interest in social justice education, inclusion, diversity, and/or intercultural training.

Grand Valley State University offers a unique curricular structure for first-year writing that centers on collaborative portfolio grading and working with embedded writing center consultants; successful candidates will demonstrate interest in and/or experience with these pedagogical strategies. The typical teaching load is12-credit hours per semester. This is a one-and-a-half year, non-tenure track position, with the possibility of renewal up to three years depending on funding and need. This position is designed for candidates planning to seek permanent positions elsewhere. To help Visiting Faculty in their continuing job searches, we provide mentoring, research and conference travel support, and performance reviews.
