I gather details on upcoming events to share with the students in my classes each week, and I’m going to begin sharing them with this list to raise awareness. In addition to religious and cultural events, I will sometimes include interesting things that I notice. This week, that means that I’m listing Ada Lovelace Day.

Students and colleagues this week may be participating in any of the following events:
- Indigenous Peoples’ Day is Monday, October 9.
- Thanksgiving takes place on Monday, October 9 in Canada.
- Ada Lovelace Day, a celebration of the contributions of women to STEM fields, occurs on Tuesday, October 10. Go Women!
- Pitru Paksha, a Hindu celebration of ancestors, continues this week. Lasting 16 days, the celebration ends on Saturday, October 14.
- Fire Prevention Week takes place this week. Check the batteries in your smoke detector.
- Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from through October 15. There are several related events at Virginia Tech.
- Breast Cancer Awareness Month lasts the entire month of October.
Additionally, keep in mind that students and colleagues may be affected by the on-going wars between Israel and Hamas and between Russia and Ukraine. Students and colleagues may also be worrying about family and friends impacted by the earthquake in Afghanistan on Saturday.
