Position Summary:

Adams State University is a state-supported, regional comprehensive university located in the San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado and the city of Alamosa. As the state’s premier Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and a Minority Serving Institution (MSI), over 50 percent of its undergraduate students represent racially diverse backgrounds. A high percentage of undergraduate students are first-generation and Pell eligible. The university offers undergraduate programs in the arts and humanities, physical and natural sciences, mechanical engineering and computer science, social sciences, kinesiology, fine arts, business, and nursing, and specializes in educator preparation in several disciplines. Adams State also offers graduate degrees in cultural resource management, public administration, music education, kinesiology,
higher education administration and leadership, history, business (MBA), and educator programs, including counselor education; the university also has a doctoral (PhD) program in counselor education.

Position Summary

The Office of Academic Affairs seeks letters of interest from individuals with an interest in serving as Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs provides support to the VPAA and leadership for several units reporting to the Office of Academic
Affairs. The AVPAA serves as the immediate supervisor for the following units:
Extended Studies, Prison Education Program, Assessment, Center for Teaching, Innovation and Research (CTIR), and Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center.

The anticipated start date is January 1, 2024.

Specific Job Duties (Essential Functions and Responsibilities)
Responsibilities may include any of the following:

● Oversee of on-campus undergraduate adjunct budget, summer school
○ Activity Pay approvals & adjunct estimate spreadsheets
○ Summer on-campus scheduling of general education courses

● Oversee of Extended Studies Executive Director, Prison Education Program Director, and their units
○ Support expansion of PEP 2nd Chance Pell & Pell
○ Oversee additional location approvals for Pell-eligible facilities
○ Promote concurrent development/expansion
○ Support the development of continuing education options for the community
○ Review & approval of Extended Studies instructors & courses (UG online, print-based &
Prof. Dev. courses)

● Oversee of Assessment Director
○ Support the development and improvement of assessment procedures

● Oversee academic catalog development and supervision of the Acalog Administrator

● Supervise Director of the Center for Teaching, Innovation and Research (CTIR) and High Impact
Practices (HIP) Coordinator
○ Support development and improvement of HIPs and professional development offerings
for faculty and staff

● Oversee the Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center
○ Supervise the Salazar Center Director
○ Provide academic oversight for the Water Studies minor and related curricular offerings

● Send curriculum approvals to the State, and HLC as needed (certificates)

● Serve on CDHE General Education Council (GEC) and participate in monthly meetings, virtual
and in-person faculty curriculum reviews, training, etc.
○ Coordinate development of transfer agreements/Statewide Transfer Articulation
Agreements (STAAs)
○ Coordinate approval/re-approval of GT Pathways courses
○ Coordinate course development with the Gen Ed Coordinating Committee (GECC)

● Coordinate transfer agreement development with TSC (Transfer Intensive implementation)

● Serve as de facto chair of the Interdisciplinary Studies degree program
○ Review and approve Interdisciplinary degree plans

● Serve as the institution’s ALO (Accreditation Liaison Officer) for HLC
○ Coordinate communications with ASU’s Vice President for Accreditation Relations at
HLC
○ Chair the HLC Steering Committee & Criterion 3 Committee
○ Coordinate Submissions of reports
○ Identify and submit additional locations
○ Identify and submit Contractual Agreements
○ Monitor Faculty Qualifications compliance

● Write & revise undergraduate policies

● Assist with the development of curriculum and partnerships as needed

● Fill in for VPAA in their absence

● Serve on campus committees as assigned by the VPAA

● Represent the Office of Academic Affairs as needed

● Other duties as assigned, including short-term assignments of a varied nature

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Terminal degree in relevant discipline
2. Five or more years of university teaching experience
3. Leadership experience and interest in academic administration
4. Demonstrated excellence in communication and collaboration.
5. Demonstrated knowledge of, sensitivity to, and ability to work effectively with, the educational needs of individuals and groups with a diverse range of identities, cultures, backgrounds, and abilities
6. Evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity of Adams State University’s student population.
7. Demonstrated commitment to meeting the ideals of the university’s vision and purpose statement.

Preferred Qualifications:

1. A broad knowledge of undergraduate education at Adams State University.
2. Ability or experience working with historically under-served and/or underrepresented populations, and first-generation college students.
3. Commitment to advancing professional development, scholarship, and service to the university and community.
4. Demonstrated self-awareness of one’s own cultural beliefs, perspectives, and privileges as a part of one’s understanding of higher education.
5. Demonstrated decision-making that is informed by research, data, and theory and that leverages students’ unique cultures, experiences, and backgrounds as strengths.

Salary and Benefits:

The pay range for this position is $99,636-$113,340.

Salary determination is commensurate with experience and education.
