Job: Assistant Director of the Academic Resource Center, Rice University

Hello, colleagues:

I’m excited to announce that my employer (Rice University in Houston, TX) is creating a central Academic Resource Center for undergraduates. This center is part of a new comprehensive student success initiative to ensure equity of access, equity of experience and equity of academic outcomes for all Rice undergraduates. We are searching now for an Assistant Director to help us shape the new center and to support creation of a coordinated, centralized, and equity-minded tutoring and supplementary instruction program that serves undergraduate students. The Assistant Director will oversee the enhancement, extension and coordination of subject-focused coaching and tutoring services.

I am posting this ad to the CWPA listserv because we envision that this person will work closely with Rice’s existing writing/communication center and first-year writing program. Our writing center director is on the working group that is designing the new center, and I (Rice’s WPA) am on the search committee for this position. Also, individuals with experience training writing center tutors/consultants and knowledge of best practices in tutoring contexts would be considered qualified candidates.

Houston is a surprisingly lovely city in which to work and live. It’s known for being one of the best food cities in the US and for its vibrant arts scene. Many are surprised to learn that it’s the most culturally and ethnically diverse city in the US. It’s quite green, with a sub-tropical climate. (I have a backyard vegetable garden from March-November!) Even better, the cost of living here is significantly lower than other major US cities (48% lower than NYC, 39% lower than Boston, 40% lower than LA, 51% lower than San Francisco, 24% lower than Chicago, 17% lower than Denver). The Rice campus itself is beautiful, a park-like enclave of 300 acres with a mix of classical and modern architecture in the center of the city.

The full job posting can be found here and closes on Nov. 22. Please share this with anyone you know who is looking for a full-time position with the opportunity to build a new program from the ground up. It’s an exciting time to be at Rice!
