The School of Humanities, Arts, and Cultural Studies (SHArCS) in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences at Arizona State University’s West campus is seeking a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor with expertise in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies in tandem with an emphasis in Disability Studies. With an appointment in SHArCS, this hire will serve two programs housed in SHArCS. The Social and Cultural Analysis (SCA) program includes undergraduate concentrations in Women and Gender Studies, Ethnic Studies, Queer and Sexuality Studies, American Studies, and Peace Studies. The Disability Studies (DST) program is an interdisciplinary endeavor that has recently launched an online program as well as a program with courses in multiple modalities.
We especially encourage applications from candidates with a Ph.D. in Women and Gender Studies, Disability Studies, Queer and Sexuality Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a comparable field. We seek candidates whose research engages a critical feminist perspective along with interdisciplinary approaches to the study of ability and disability. We are also open to well-qualified candidates with Ph.D. degrees in other fields as long as they have a track record of specializing in women and gender studies, sexuality studies, and disability studies. Candidates should also have a record of working collaboratively across fields, and in conducting socially embedded research in relevant communities. Candidates whose work displays attention to intersections between the social identities of race, gender, class, ability, and sexuality are strongly encouraged to apply.
The faculty member will work across the Social and Cultural Analysis (SCA) and Disability Studies (DST) programs, teaching a range of introductory and upper-division courses in their areas of specialty. The candidate should be prepared to teach both Introduction to Women and Gender Studies and/or Introduction to Queer and Sexuality Studies along with upper-division elective courses in both Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies and Disability Studies. Our programs already have faculty and curricula that focus on Feminist Studies, Chicanx Studies, LGBTQ Studies, Indigenous Studies, Disability Studies, and Women and Gender Studies, and we are eager to build on these strengths and expand our commitment to intersectional pedagogies and research.
In addition to pursuing an active research agenda, the successful candidate will be expected to effectively teach two courses per semester and advise a diverse population of students, including first-generation students. The ability to teach online courses along with a commitment to prioritizing community engagement and addressing issues of access and inclusion are welcomed.

Essential Functions of the Position:
- Carrying out peer-reviewed research in the candidate’s area of specialization within Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies and Disability Studies
- Teach interdisciplinary introductory courses in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies and Disability Studies, existing upper-division courses in both of these areas, and courses of their own design that will attract students to these programs
- Collaborating with the core faculty groups in both Social and Cultural Analysis and Disability Studies
- Engaging in service at the School, College, and University level
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in Women and Gender Studies, Disability Studies, Queer and Sexuality Studies, Ethnic Studies, or a comparable field at time of hire.
Desired Qualifications:
- The ability to teach both introductory and advanced interdisciplinary courses in Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies and Disability Studies.
- Evidence of a strong research agenda.
- Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including first-generation college students.
- Experience teaching online and face-to-face, ideally in both synchronous and asynchronous formats.
- Demonstrated commitment to engaging in service to the units, campus, university, and broader community.
