The University of Minnesota, Twin Cities has opened a search for the director of its award-winning Writing Across the Curriculum Program (WAC). Minnesota’s 34-year old WAC Program is composed of the pioneering intradisciplinary Writing-Enriched Curriculum Program (WEC) and the multifaceted interdisciplinary Teaching with Writing Program (TWW). This full-time position is appropriate for an experienced WAC professional. It reports directly to the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education (OUE) and works with the Vice Provost, the Associate Dean for the University Curriculum, the OUE Director, and other OUE and campus partners on a variety of projects, initiatives, and committee assignments. The position also interacts with the units reporting to OUE, faculty, and staff in the Twin Cities undergraduate colleges and other campus offices. Salary range $100,000-$120,000 commensurate with experience.
The Director leads and is accountable for performance and results related to the curricular integration of effective writing instruction in all undergraduate departments and programs. It is responsible for establishing programmatic vision, procedures, and policy; overseeing an annual recurring budget; supervising a core team and supporting a cross-curricular group of affiliated faculty members (60+); providing leadership and expertise on campus-wide committees associated with assessment, institutional accreditation, and writing policy. The WAC Director administers and reports on multiple modes of curricular and instructional assessment, and uses data yielded by these assessments to modify and modulate programmatic practices in order to ensure their applicability to multiple contexts. The position also co-directs the five-program Center for Writing and has served as a principal investigator for institutional and national research grants.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Terminal graduate degree in Rhetoric/Composition or a related field and 8 years of professional work experience, or an advanced degree with at least 10 years of directly related professional work experience
A minimum of five years’ experience conducting WAC/WID-focused faculty development activities that include offering teaching workshops and consultations to faculty members and graduate student instructors in diverse post-secondary disciplines
More than two years’ experience leading an institution-wide program related to writing, writing instruction, and/or faculty development in a higher-education context
Experience leading institutional writing and programmatic assessments
More than two years’ experience managing a programmatic budget
More than two years’ (four semesters) experience teaching academic writing (or teaching with writing) as instructor of record for courses offered at a college or university
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference will be given to candidates with…
PhD in Rhetoric/Composition, Writing Studies, or a related field
Experience (and evidence of success) directing a WAC/WID/WEC program at a higher education institution
Research in writing/teaching that has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals.
Evidence of presenting sessions as part of WAC/WID/WEC-related conferences and institutes (e.g., IWAC, CCCC, WRAB, WEC Institute, Dartmouth Seminar)
Evidence of programmatic vision, from conception to implementation and assessment
More than two years of experience supervising a team composed of 3+ full-time staff members
Experience designing and conducting institution-wide writing assessment, particularly with collecting and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative educational assessment data
Experience leading a WAC / WI instructor certification program
Experience with writing-intensive course oversight (course approval, instructor training, etc.)
