I am pleased to advertise a brand-new staff position in the writing program at Rice University — we are hiring a program manager for the first-year writing program (FWIS). Our program is 12 years old, very vibrant, and very collegial, and we are excited to add a new colleague! This person will be joining an admin team consisting of the program manager for the overarching Program in Writing and Communication, who is an excellent mentor, as well as the program coordinator for our writing and communication center.
The job description and application instructions are available online. The hiring range is $53k-58k, with full benefits, a relocation stipend, private office, and the opportunity to work from home up to two days per week.
Rice is a private university with about 8500 total students. The incoming first-year class is ~1200, and the first-year writing program fields about 100 courses per year. Rice is ranked among the nation’s top 20 universities by U.S. News & World Report and has a 6-to-1 undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio. Houston is known for being one of the best food cities in the US and for its vibrant arts scene. Many are surprised to learn that it’s the most culturally and ethnically diverse city in the US. Both the city and the campus are quite green, with a sub-tropical climate. Even better, the cost of living here is significantly lower than other major US cities (58% lower than NYC, 44% < San Francisco, 36% < Boston, 35% < LA, 16% < Chicago, 12% < Denver, 7% < Dallas). The Rice campus itself is beautiful, a park-like enclave of 300 acres with a mix of classical and modern architecture in the center of the city.
If you know of anyone who is relocating to Houston or is interested in administrative work in a flourishing writing program, please share this position with them. I am happy to answer questions.
