CFP: Boston Rhetoric and Writing Network (BRAWN) research grants

Dear Colleagues,

The Boston Rhetoric and Writing Network (BRAWN) is pleased to announce two grants for $500.00 each for members of the BRAWN community who are interested in creating local archival projects, developing the NACR itself, or doing archival research in the NACR from August 2024 to May 2025. We are open to many kinds of projects that will use the current and developing resources of NACR to further our understanding of the history of composition and rhetoric, locally and nationally, and add new materials, media, networked archival funds, and research opportunities to develop the NACR for the 21st century. We especially would welcome any projects devoted to archival studies honoring the work and legacy of John C. Brereton.

The NACR began in the 1990s as a joint project of four New England land grant institutions (University of Rhode Island, University of New Hampshire, University of Massachusetts Amherst, University of Connecticut) and representatives of the publishing industry and other academic institutions to build an archive documenting primary materials of multiple sites, sources, programs, figures, texts, curricula characterizing the development of rhetoric and composition as a field.

If you are interested in submitting a short proposal, please fill out THIS FORM, which will ask for your contact information, status/position, and a short description of the question you want to investigate or project you would like to undertake, the time frame you are considering for your work and what you would like to see as a result of your work. Share the names of any others who might support your work, collaborate with you, or help sponsor it as necessary or appropriate.

Potential projects to take on:

  • An archiving “bee” (i.e., collaborative project to catalog an existing archive).
  • Generating white papers or documents to contribute to website development of the NACR
    • Mission statements
    • Archiving resource list (bibliographies, list of URLs, and links to other sites and resources)
  • Collecting materials, oral histories, artifacts, etc. (can include travel reimbursement for archival deliveries).
  • Visit to an existing archive to do scholarly research (a travel grant).
  • Development of a digital archive of a writing program/writing center history.
  • Development of curriculum or classroom syllabi for teaching with archives.
  • Developing an archive of the papers of a noted figure in composition and rhetoric.

Note: If you have an idea of other projects you would like to explore, please contact Meaghan.Dittrich to see if it is feasible.

Please submit your proposal by Sunday, September 1, 2024, at 11:59 pm EST.

All projects will be highlighted on the new NACR Website (coming soon) and then invited to present results/ follow-up at the next BRAWN Summer Institute (2025).

Kindest regards,

Meaghan
