My name is Charles Woods and I produce a podcast called, The Big Rhetorical Podcast. In October 2024, I am producing the 5th annual The Big Rhetorical Podcast Carnival. The idea behind this podcast carnival is like a blog carnival and was inspired by the work of the Sweetland Digital Rhetoric Collaborative at the University of Michigan.

The theme of the 2024 TBR Podcast Carnival is Politics/Rhetorics: Navigating Crisis, Culture, and Civility. The theme is intentionally broad so that podcasters who work in a variety of areas or topics may produce with the theme in mind in their own unique way, with their own voice and for their audience. As you begin brainstorming, consider the theme from a variety of dimensions that are unique to your podcast.

Last year, for our fourth annual podcast carnival, over a dozen podcasts joined our lineup, including Pedagogue, Kairoticast, and Writing Remix Podcast. We hope to double podcast participants for our carnival this year and are well on our way to doing so.

Here is how it works: carnival episodes from podcasts will be released daily from October 28-31, 2024, culminating in a keynote podcast episode on The Big Rhetorical Podcast on October 31.

New in 2024

Don’t have a podcast? No problem! TBR Podcast welcomes completed original short- and long-form audio productions (capped around 1 hour). TBR Podcast will fold your production into their RSS feed with the other podcasts, but give you full credit. You could perform an interview, recite a monologue, host a roundtable, or create a voice production around the Carnival theme. This is a great way to learn the basics of podcasting, to raise your public profile and digital footprint as a scholar, or to engage your students with podcasting projects that can then go out and reach an audience in the world.

TBR Podcast Emerging Scholar Award

We are continuing the TBR Podcast Emerging Scholar Award for graduate students for the fourth year! The goal of this award is to highlight graduate students who make significant contributions to rhetoric, writing studies, and communications in their teaching, service, scholarship, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. More information, including detailed criteria and instructions on how to nominate, is available here: https://bit.ly/3mEmfjl. I award this prize via the non-profit organization I run so that it includes a financial award of $100.

Important Information

The 2024 TBR Podcast Carnival is slated to take place October 28-31, with final productions due on October 28. More communication concerning specific publication dates during that week, file-sharing information, approaching the theme, and general logistical support will be provided if you accept our invitation to participate.

If you’re interested, but perhaps still on the fence, I invite you to listen to past episodes of the podcast. Check out last year’s podcast carnival keynote with Dr. Madison Jones, Founder of The DWELL Lab at the University of Rhode Island: https://bit.ly/3KKQxsN; Dr. Renee Hobbs, Founder and Director of the Media Education Lab at the University of Rhode Island: https://bit.ly/3LiCIB5; or, the 2020 keynote featuring James Chase Sanchez from Middlebury College: https://bit.ly/3rYI2yK. Or, you might be interested in our interview with Pulitzer Prize winning writer John Archibald: https://bit.ly/31TXvWA; or, our interview with former NYT Data Artist in Residence and National Geographic Explorer Jer Thorp: https://bit.ly/3rLjAUo.

To make sure we have a vibrant, inclusive community new podcasts are invited to join throughout the summer. I think this is a great way to support the work of podcasters in rhetoric, writing studies, communications, and related fields in higher education. I also think this is a great way of building a network of podcasters with similar interests. I hope that you accept our invitation to participate in the 2024 The Big Rhetorical Podcast Carnival. Please let me know if you have any questions.

If you are interested in taking part in the 2024 TBR Podcast Carnival, please reach out to us via email with your contact information: name of host(s), name of podcast, website, email, and short host bio and podcast description.
