Job: Assistant Professor/Dir. of Comp. at Washburn University

Dear colleagues,

I am excited to share that Washburn University’s Department of English is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin Fall, 2025. Applicants are expected to have a Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition, Writing Studies, or a closely related field. This position will also serve as our Director of Composition and receive course releases for the administrative duties.

Washburn requires two composition classes for all undergraduate majors, and most bachelor’s degrees also require a third, upper division writing class. All faculty in the English department teach composition, and the teaching of writing is highly valued within the department and the university as a whole. We also plan to run searches this year for a second assistant professor/writing center director, and two lecturers in composition/writing studies, so this position is one of several that will join an already thriving composition program and help lead us forward.

Washburn is a teaching-focused, open admissions university, so candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching composition to students of all backgrounds. We are also interested in candidates who have experience teaching developmental writing, scientific and technical writing, professional writing, and/or graduate level professional writing. Our department has a co-requisite first year writing program, oversees a writing center, and is involved in the university’s correctional degree program at the local women’s prison.

If you have questions about the position, you are welcome to reach out to the search chair, Dr. Kara Kendall-Morwick kara.kendall-morwick. I am also happy to answer questions. The link to the full job description is below:
