Mercy University (NY) invites applications for an open-rank tenured or tenure-track faculty position with specialization in Rhetoric and Composition to begin September 2025 (4/4 teaching load). We seek applicants who demonstrate the multicultural competence and awareness to teach diverse student populations at the largest private Hispanic-Serving Institution in New York State. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in dynamic, equity-driven undergraduate teaching, and ideally, familiarity with basic writing and co-requisite models of first-year composition. Applicants with scholarship and expertise in the areas of first-year writing (including areas of antiracist teaching and assessment, multilingualism, and/or disability studies) and WAC/WID are especially encouraged to apply. Mercy has a new model of Gen Ed that delivers writing intensive courses and that looks to promote best practices in the teaching and tutoring of writing through collaborative opportunities, such as within the Center for Academic Excellence and Innovation.
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:
- Responsibilities include the teaching of in-person first-year composition courses on our Dobbs Ferry campus (and on our Bronx or Manhattan campuses as needed)
- Contributing to curriculum development and initiatives around first-year composition and Writing Across the Curriculum
- Teaching areas may also include upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses depending on departmental need and the candidate’s qualifications and interests
- Service to the Department, English Program, School of Liberal Arts, and University is also required

Required Skills & Experience:
- An active research agenda in writing studies
- Experience teaching first-year writing as an instructor of record
- Exceptional communication skills
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Experience in writing programs or writing center administration is highly desirable, as the candidate will help lead curriculum design and/or instructor training within the first-year writing program and across the university.
Education Requirements:
A Ph.D. in Rhetoric and Composition by appointment date is required
