Dear Colleagues,
This is a reminder that the next Teaching Democracy workshop is coming up this Friday, January 10th at 12 PM Eastern.
Dr. Gerard Hauser, Professor Emeritus of Distinction in Rhetoric at the University of Colorado Boulder, will be presenting "The Challenge of Radical Contingency to Rhetorical Pedagogy" to be followed by a Q&A and breakout sessions allowing participants to consider the talk in light of their own pedagogy and curriculum plans for spring 2025.
The global rise of nationalism has been aided by rhetorical forms that have fueled public rage. New media have catapulted political, social and cultural engagements from contingent relations to those of radical contingency. Radical contingency has revealed the fragility of associations and shared commitments, of what counts as fact and knowledge, and strained our understanding of a common reference world on which society depends. In this talk I hope to engage you in considering the possibilities for rhetorical pedagogy to equip our students as citizens who create commonwealth.
