We invite you to engage with a series of video interviews with scholars at the American University of Beirut as they discuss writing in their academic field, learning to write in and across different languages, and giving writing guidance to their students. The videos were created for Writers in the University, a research project funded by the university’s Center for Teaching and Learning.
Viewed collectively, the discussions show the writers’ widely differing aims, values, and practices, as shaped by their academic disciplines. Some reflect the complexity of the scholars’ identification with their disciplines. Several conversations highlight the powerful roles that mentors have played in the scholars’ lives. Finally, the faculty members share nuanced stories about their experiences of learning and writing in different languages.
While the Writers in the University project is intended to contribute to the teaching and learning of writing at the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, we hope the videos may also be stimulating and instructive to others in Lebanon, the MENA region, and beyond.
