Nan Johnson Fellowship for Archival Research
The Ohio State University’s Writing, Rhetoric, and Literacy Studies (WRL) program is seeking applications for the Nan Johnson Fellowship, which supports access to the Nan Johnson and Jerry Tarver Collections, as well as other Ohio State archives and special collections related to the history of writing, rhetoric, and literacy. This one-time award of up to $1,400 will subsidize travel costs associated with visiting these physical archives during the period of August 2025–July 2026.
About the Collections
The Nan Johnson Fellowship helps fund historical research using materials in the OSU archives relevant to the history of rhetoric, composition, and literacy, including:
- The Nan Johnson Collection on Elocution and Rhetoric (Books and Ephemera)
- The Jerry Tarver Elocution, Rhetoric, and Oratory Collection (Books or Ephemera)
- The Ohio State University, Department of English Records
Eligibility
This fellowship is open to scholars in rhetoric, composition, and/or literacy studies wishing to conduct research in Ohio State’s archives or special collections. Graduate students, contingent faculty, and junior faculty applicants will be given preference. Students, faculty, and staff of Ohio State are not eligible for the fellowship.
To Apply
Submit a statement of interest (1200-word max) and current CV using this form (Word or PDF only). Your statement of interest should: (1) Describe the project within rhetoric, composition, and/or literacy studies for which you would visit the Ohio State Archives; (2) explain how the Nan Johnson, Jerry Tarver, and/or other Ohio State archives and special collections related to the history of composition and rhetoric would contribute to that project; (3) outline the project budget; and (4) provide a tentative project timeline and schedule for your travel.
The deadline to apply is 11:59 p.m., March 16, 2025. Applications will be reviewed by a committee of WRL faculty and staff, and applicants will be notified of the committee’s decision by April 21, 2025.
