Job: 2 contingent instructor positions-University of Detroit Mercy

The University of Detroit Mercy Department of English invites applications for two part-time adjunct instructor positions. Successful candidates will be effective and enthusiastic teachers with a strong commitment to supporting a diverse population of undergraduate students. Writing courses are capped at 23 students.

Master’s degree in English

Compensation

$3,150 per course ($6,300 for two sections)

Position I:

  • ENL 1300: College Writing
    T/Th 9:55 to 11:10
  • ENL 3080: Business Writing
    T/Th 11:20 to 12:35

Position II:

  • ENL 1310: Academic Writing
    M/W 11:00 to 11:50
  • ENL 1310: Academic Writing
    M/W 12:00 to 12:50

Note: These sections are hybrid. In addition to 100 minutes of face-to-face instruction, the instructor will deliver the equivalent of 50 minutes of course content per week in an asynchronous, online modality via Blackboard.

Additional Details:

  • ENL 1300: College Writing is the first part of Detroit Mercy’s first-year writing sequence.
  • ENL 1310: Academic Writing is the second part of Detroit Mercy’s first-year writing sequence.
  • ENL 3080: Business Writing is a professional writing course required for all Business majors.
  • Assignments for all three courses vary by professor, and you may tailor the course to your own expertise and interests (while meeting required course outcomes).
  • Syllabi and assignments are available for instructors to adopt or adapt.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Implement teaching strategies that foster students’ development as writers while creating an inclusive, respectful, supportive, and welcoming learning environment.
  2. Be available to students by email and/or in person to provide support and assistance outside of class (recommended 2 hours/week office hours). Refer students to Chair and appropriate university support services as needed.
  3. Provide students a course syllabus consistent with University guidelines that provides clear expectations to students, particularly regarding grading and course policies.
  4. Utilize the university’s Learning Management System (Blackboard) to post instructional content, record grades, etc.
  5. Review University/College policies with Chair. Bring any incidents of academic dishonesty to the attention of the college.
  6. Grade and return written work to students in a timely manner. Maintain appropriate records of students’ work for course assessment.
  7. Submit mid-term and final grades by the scheduled deadlines.
