Dear Colleagues,
San Diego State is looking to fill two positions, one Assistant Professor, the other an Associate or Full Professor with a focus on Border Studies. Review of applications begins March 11. Preference will be given to candidates whose work is interdisciplinary and/or collaborative across different colleges. We are open to anyone whose expertise is on any border region around the world or engaging borders conceptually according to the dictates of their respective disciplines or fields of study. The positions are listed on Interfolio as VPAA# 2025/26-05 (Associate or Full) and VPAA# 2025/26-06 (Assistant). We are seeking applicants who engage in border scholarship broadly conceived. We welcome applications from scholars in any discipline whose work addresses any of a myriad of border issues as understood in their fields and not just limited to nation state borders. Examples may include, but are not limited to, Indigenous Borderlands, border ethnomusicology, history of science, borders of disciplinary thinking, cross-border land and resource management, binational biodiversity, transborder ecologies and built environments, chaos theory, transnational public health, border art, comparative border studies, cross-border leadership and entrepreneurship, border cities, border economies, technologies of care, border cinema, sustainable agriculture, alternative sustainable tourism management, border environmental health, transborder environmental engineering, sustainable planning in border regions, multinational public policy, border indigenous sciences. Scholars who work on different border sites around the world, at and beyond the U.S/Mexico border, and have demonstrated success with extramural funding, are encouraged to apply.
Successful applicants will teach interdisciplinary courses, conduct research, and generate publications in their own disciplinary journals as well as other public venues such as theater, film or other artistic venues. The candidates will be given the opportunity to request their home department and be expected to teach both lower level and upper level undergraduate courses, and graduate level courses where appropriate, as well as courses they develop within their area of expertise. We seek a scholar who has demonstrated experience with community engagement and/or is committed to developing community-based projects. As an HSI situated 25 miles from the US-Mexico Border, with an Imperial Valley campus located blocks from the border in Calexico, our University has a unique focus and rich local contexts that have helped foster and build our commitment to border research and scholarship more broadly. Currently, San Diego State University is home to a diverse cohort of Border Studies scholars housed in departments, colleges, and campuses across the University and offers a minor and certificate in Border Studies.
