Dear colleagues,
Joanne Baird Giordano, our hero, has created space for TYCA sessions each hour on Friday and Saturday at Cs (do a search for “TYCA”).
We are thrilled to share that the TYCA Writing Placement Networkhas two sessions: One is focused on working toward a future of writing placement that empowers students as it demonstrates our values about literacy; the other is a drop-in session to work on your writing placement projects. Details about both are at the end of this email, and all are welcome!
We hope to see you at TYCA and at Cs.
Sincerely,
Jessica Nastal and Kris Messer
The Future of Writing Placement
Friday, April 11
12:30–1:45 pm
Location: Meeting Room 311, Baltimore Convention Center
Room Level: Level 300
In this working session, we invite writing placement practitioners to talk about the future of writing placement. We will discuss how we might redirect, revise, and reimagine current practices to better empower students.
The TYCA White Paper was published nearly 10 years ago and has been instrumental in driving writing placement revisions in an attempt to achieve equity in access to first-year writing and to afford students agency in their academic writing experiences. As we pick up this challenge, it is necessary to build towards both classroom spaces and assessment practices—including placement practices—that foster the formation of connected and multifaceted relationships, not solely between people, but amongst ideas, shared issues, and necessary actions that can transform academic space. This is the work that can transform the lived experience of students who come to our classroom for myriad and diverse reasons.
Drop-In Help For Writing Placement Projects
Saturday, April 12

We invite conference attendees to stop by this drop-in session to get help with all aspects of writing placement projects; for instance, designing, aligning, and evaluating placement practices; communicating to students, faculty, staff, administrators, and external stakeholders about writing placement; and building internal and external partnerships regarding writing placement, including with dual credit/concurrent enrollment partners.
