Survey: CCCC-sponsored research on writing teachers’ emotions

Dear colleague,

You are invited to participate in a research study that aims to understand writing teachers’ emotions in responding to students’ use of AI in writing.

This research (IRB protocol number 14993) is led by Dr. Xiao Tan from the English Department of Utah State University and sponsored by Conference on College Composition and Communication (CCCC). The potential benefits of this study include helping you understand your own teaching practices and emotions. The results will also generate knowledge and practical implications for researchers and educators to improve writing pedagogy that could be beneficial for future teachers

You are eligible to participate in this study, if you fulfill the following requirements:

1. You are over 18 years old.
2. You currently teach writing courses at a post-secondary level in the United States.
3. You have experienced emotional moments when responding to students’ use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in their writing.

If you participate, you will contribute the following data to be included for analysis. Please note that since your participation is voluntary, you may choose to exclude part of the data from this study.

• An initial interview, ideally at the beginning of a semester, with Dr. Tan to discuss your educational and professional background (about 1 hour)
• A monthly short narrative documenting your emotional reaction to students’ use of GenAI for three months.
• A monthly interview based on the narrative (~40 minutes) for three months after the initial interview.
• Any supporting materials such as teaching documents, syllabus, project prompt, etc.

As a token of gratitude, I would like to compensate for your participation with a $150 Amazon gift card. Participants will be selected based on their academic status, afflicted institution, types of courses, and linguistic backgrounds to ensure a representation of a diverse teacher population. In case of early withdraw, participants will receive partial compensation based on the amount of data they contribute: $50 for completing the initial interview; $15 for completing each monthly interview; $10 for completing each narrative; and $5 for submitting a piece of supporting document.
