Good Morning,
I hope your week is off to a great start! Would it be possible to post the position (below) on our behalf? I would like to remain confidential and was wondering the best way to proceed.
Visiting Assistant Professor of Academic Writing (2025-26)
Pitzer College invites applications for a one-year Visiting Assistant Professor of Academic Writing for the 2025-26 academic year. We seek an innovative scholar-teacher whose academic trajectory aligns with Pitzer’s commitment to social responsibility, intercultural understanding, and interdisciplinary learning. We are especially eager to hire a candidate with a record of success in writing-across-the-curriculum leadership and support.
About Pitzer College:
Pitzer College is a member of The Claremont Colleges, a vibrant consortium of five undergraduate institutions and two graduate universities located in Claremont, California. Founded in 1963, Pitzer is a selective small liberal arts college with an experimental and community-engaged curriculum emphasizing social responsibility, student engagement, social justice, and intercultural understanding. Small class sizes, a tight knit residential community, and frequent student-faculty interaction foster a learning environment conducive to the teaching of writing as a liberal art.
Position Details:
This is a one-year, non-renewable Visiting Assistant Professor appointment for the 2025-26 academic year. The salary range for this position is $68,400-$70,200. The teaching load is four courses total (two per semester). In the fall semester only, the Visiting Assistant Professor of Academic Writing will serve as Acting Director of College Writing, while the current director is on sabbatical. The latter role consists of roughly 12 hours of administrative work per week coordinating and facilitating workshops and events that support faculty writing and the teaching and assessment of writing at the college in collaboration with the First-Year Seminar Program, the Writing Center, the Office of Institutional Research and Assessment, and the Office of the Dean of Faculty. During the fall, the Acting Director of College Writing meets weekly with the Writing Center Director to coordinate writing initiatives for faculty and staff, including workshops on writing pedagogy and write-ins to support faculty in their research. We are particularly eager to hire an experienced and innovative teacher of writing who is committed to experimental and inclusive writing pedagogies and to fostering community around writing and its support at a small liberal arts college. In the spring semester, the Visiting Assistant Professor position will be dedicated exclusively to teaching.
Qualifications:
We favor candidates who can contribute to the College’s distinctive educational objectives, which promote interdisciplinary perspectives, intercultural understanding, and concern with social responsibility and the ethical implications of knowledge and action. Pitzer College is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. For the successful applicant with the relevant interests, affiliations are possible with the intercollegiate departments of Africana Studies, Asian American Studies, Chican@/Latin@ Studies, and/or the Intercollegiate Feminist Center for Teaching, Research, and Engagement.
Required:
Ph.D. or ABD in Rhetoric and Composition (or English with a specialization in Rhetoric and Composition).
A Ph.D. in a different liberal arts field is desirable if accompanied by at least two years of experience teaching writing in a discipline or teaching writing to first-year students (e.g., first-year seminar, senior seminar, writing-intensive courses in a liberal arts field).
At least one year of administrative experience, preferably in successfully coordinating or leading an academic program, initiative, or center.
A collaborative ethos and excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
A commitment to or demonstrable experience with inclusive pedagogies or social justice.
Preferred:
Three or more years of experience in the teaching or tutoring of writing and formal training in the same.
Experience teaching theme-based writing seminars in a liberal arts discipline.
A record of success in an administrative role in a writing center or program, with a strong interest in pursuing or sustaining a career as a writing program administrator.
Ability to design conceptually rich writing courses that would contribute to a vibrant and interdisciplinary writing program whose curriculum is part of a consortium-wide major in Writing and Rhetoric housed at Scripps College. Writing-intensive courses in science writing, journalism, creative non-fiction, the arts, critical data studies, public humanities, media studies, environmental analysis, community engagement, or other social justice-oriented fields of inquiry in the candidate’s area of expertise are particularly welcome.
An active research agenda or ongoing professional development in writing studies with an emphasis on first-year writing, writing-in-the-disciplines, writing-across-the-curriculum, writing assessment, and/or inclusive writing pedagogies.
