News: AWAC Statement on AI & Writing Across the Curriculum

Hi folks,

As Chair of the Association for Writing Across the Curriculum, I’m pleased to share the AWAC Statement on AI and Writing Across the Curriculum. The statement offers guiding principles for teaching with and about AI across disciplinary contexts, along with classroom strategies, student guidance, institutional policy pointers, sample activities, decision frameworks, and a glossary. It’s intended for faculty and academic administrators across the disciplines, WAC/WID program leaders, writing center professionals, and academic units shaping course and program guidance at the intersection of AI and writing. Part II includes sections written directly to postsecondary instructors, students, and AI policy developers.

The statement was developed by multiple AWAC working groups and integrated across sections by an editorial team—Kristi Girdharry (Babson College) and me. We shared an earlier version at the IWAC Conference in July and strengthened it in response to community feedback. Working with such thoughtful colleagues across our community throughout this process has been a professional privilege.

You can access the statement here: https://wacassociation.org/statement-on-ai-writing-tools-in-wac/

To support fall planning, the statement is being shared ahead of formal Executive Board approval and therefore reflects the authors’ perspectives (all AWAC members), not necessarily AWAC as a whole. A more browser-friendly web version is on the way.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to the development and review of the statement. I’m eager to hear how folks use the statement in your courses and programs this fall!

Best,
Crystal
