Survey: Research Study on AI Writing Technologies in Academic Contexts

Dear Colleagues,
I am writing to share information about a research study examining how different members of the academic community use and conceptualize AI writing technologies in their scholarly work. As writing scholars, instructors, and writing program administrators, you are uniquely positioned to understand both the opportunities and challenges these technologies present in academic contexts.

Study Overview: This IRB-approved research investigates the experiences, practices, and perceptions associated with AI writing tools (ChatGPT, Grammarly AI, Claude, etc.) across different academic roles and disciplines. The goal is to better understand how these technologies are being integrated into academic writing practices and what implications this has for writing pedagogy and academic integrity.

Participation involves:

  • A brief online survey (10-15 minutes) for all participants
  • Optional follow-up activities with compensation: interviews, writing observations, or technology use diaries

Seeking participants who are:

  • Undergraduate students, graduate students, faculty, or researchers
  • 18+ and actively engaged in academic writing
  • At any type of higher education institution

The research aims to contribute empirical data to ongoing conversations in our field about AI’s role in academic writing. I would be grateful if you could both participate yourself and share this opportunity with colleagues or students who might be interested.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions about the study.

Thanks!
