Reporting to the provost, the Dean of the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University will serve as the chief academic and executive officer of the College. The Dean will provide strategic leadership, vision, and management to support excellence in the College’s teaching, research, and service mission, consistent with West Virginia University’s top-tier research ratings, national reputation, and institutional priorities. The ideal candidate will be a visionary, goal-oriented, and collaborative academic leader with a record of success in a large, complex organization. They should also have a deep understanding of and appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic oversight in the College, including setting goals and priorities in collaboration with College and University-wide stakeholders, constructing the College budget, advocating for the resource requirements of the College departments and research units, and allocating funds among them, directing operations of professional staff, and leading advocacy efforts for policy initiatives and departmental strategic plans.
  • Ensure progress and evaluate results of strategic initiatives.
  • Promote student success initiatives.
  • Communicate the vision, successes, and priorities of the College to internal and external stakeholders and advocate for the College in the University’s long-term planning and policy-making processes.
  • Generate ideas to grow enrollment and oversee and coordinate undergraduate and graduate recruiting efforts for the College.
  • Lead the effort to create and promote a shared culture in the College that fosters inclusiveness, collaboration, and shared decision making.
  • Prioritize faculty and staff recruitment, retention, and development, and work with department heads on salary administration, start-up funds, professional development, promotion, and tenure. Promote teaching and research excellence among faculty and submit recommendations for recognition of outstanding achievements when appropriate.
  • Coordinate searches for and recommend appointments of department heads and research directors.
  • Lead the College’s teaching, research, and administrative functions and delegate responsibility to appropriate staff members.
  • Supervise, evaluate, and ensure professional development for assigned staff.
  • Collaborate and work with various groups in a complex, dynamic environment that includes education and robust research.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting the research enterprise across all disciplines of the College while maintaining high academic standards.
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the value of liberal arts education.
  • Lead world-class, high-impact research advancing knowledge in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
  • Collaborate with University administration on assessing and responding to state academic and budget issues.
  • Manage resources wisely by allocating human resources, space, technology, and budgets to support defined priorities.
  • Develop facilities planning and management.
  • In collaboration with College- and University-wide stakeholders, conceive, foster, communicate, and implement a shared vision for the College.
  • Appreciate the various cultures reflected in the College, imagine new possibilities for advancing knowledge, educating students, and serving the University and the community.
  • Respond strategically to change and navigate through challenges with composure.
  • Promote excellence and foster opportunity and respect among faculty, staff, and students.
  • Engage with the College Development Officer in external fundraising activities to increase external financial support and revenue streams for the College by building deep relationships with alumni and donors.
  • Ensure the effective utilization of endowed funds in support of donor intent.

Qualifications

  • Earned Doctorate and a record of scholarly achievement appropriate for a tenured appointment at the level of full professor in a department within the College.
  • Substantial record of administrative leadership in a large research university or comparable organization at the level of Dean, Associate Dean, Department Head, or Chair.

  • Record of success in the fiscal and operational management of a complex program.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to fundraise to support the strategic priorities of the College.
  • Understanding of current trends in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences.
  • Understanding how a liberal arts education strengthens many aspects of our lives, from an individualís interpersonal skills to their career and marketability, and their participation in civic groups and communities.
  • Demonstrated dedication to student success, shared governance, faculty excellence, and staff development.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in recruiting strategies.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, interpret operational needs, and develop integrated, creative solutions.
  • Demonstrated success in building, developing, and maintaining an effective team.
  • Demonstrated mentorship, employee development, and performance management.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups.
  • Demonstrated management of budgets and allocation of operational resources.
