Survey: Looking for writing instructors who practice specifications grading

Hello Fellow Writing Instructors,

I am looking for writing instructors who practice specifications grading, which is an alternative grading practice. I would like to form a panel for the online Grading Conference in June organized by the Center for Grading Reform. The abstract (proposal) is due February 13.

Panel Discussion

  • Length: 75 minutes
  • Format: Interactive Q&A with a host (me) asking questions (audience can ask questions, too)
  • Number of panelists: 3-6
  • Theme: Implementing specifications grading in the writing classroom (this theme can be tweaked depending on the panelists’ expertise)
  • Relevance: Specifications grading is a good fit for writing instruction, but there is not much information/research/assistance/examples on how to develop a working system (especially since there are so many variations to specs grading and so many different types of writing courses (composition, tech/prof comm, etc.))
  • Audience: Writing instructors interested in implementing, currently developing, or currently revising specifications grading who are looking for wisdom, practical advice, examples, and feedback on their approaches
  • Cost to attend conference: $75 for faculty; $35 for students
  • Conference dates: June 16-18, online

I began researching alternative grading systems a year ago and have decided that specifications grading is a good fit for my professional and business writing courses. I am currently developing a system that I hope to test in the fall. I attended an Alternative Grading Institute in December and was very impressed with what I learned and the help I received. I would like to form a panel for the conference to help those who are in the throes of discovering, developing, or implementing their specs grading systems and would benefit from learning from those who have done it before.

If you would like to be a panelist or would like to know more, please contact me at lvernon. I would love to hear from you.

Warmest regards,

Laura Vernon
