The University of Utah is accepting applications for its graduate program in Writing and Rhetoric Studies until December 15, 2023. We offer the MA, MS, and the PhD.
The graduate program engages students in developing the intellectual background and research skills necessary to enter the field of writing and rhetoric studies as professionals engaged in a variety of pedagogical and scholarly work. It emphasizes rhetoric’s connections with writing as a traditional and contemporary technology, as an instructional concern inside and outside formal educational environments, and as a practice integrated into organizations, publics, workplaces, and other human communities. It emphasizes both broad disciplinary training and the refinement of a specific scholarly area through rigorous research. Student cohorts join us from every geographical region, nationally and globally. Because we admit a small cohort annually, our students receive quality individual mentoring. Our record of placement for our students is high.
Faculty members are known for their scholarship and hold leadership positions in the field. Areas in which they hold expertise include:
• Coloniality/Decoloniality• Comparative & Cultural Rhetorics• Digital/Sonic Rhetorics• Feminist Rhetorics• LGBTQ+ Studies• Legal Rhetorics• Multilingualism/Translingualism• Muslim Rhetorics• Research Methods• Rhetoric of Science and Technology• Two-Year College/Transfer Studies• Writing Across the Curriculum• Writing Assessment
Please note that the GRE is no longer required. Supported students generally teach our first-year writing courses, and advanced PhD students, supported by their mentors, may teach upper-division courses. Supported full-time students receive a tuition benefit: students are supported for two years at the MA/MF level and four years at the PhD level. Fifth-year teaching is also available conditional on student academic progress and funding. There are also other funding opportunities throughout the campus including the Graduate School and our own Humanities Center.
