Hello colleagues!

The Division of Communication, Composition, and Rhetoric at Methodist University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant or Advanced Assistant Professor of Composition and Rhetoric

Job Location
Methodist University—Fayetteville, NC

Education Level
Earned Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric or in English with specialization in Composition and Rhetoric/Writing Studies from a regionally accredited university

Job Description

The Division of Communication, Composition, and Rhetoric at Methodist University invites applications for one full-time, tenure-track position to begin Fall 2024. The candidate will teach in our Composition and Rhetoric program with an emphasis on first-year writing (FYW), as well as opportunities to propose and teach new courses for our Writing minor and upper-division courses. The teaching load is 4/4 and will be predominately in a face-to-face teaching format, with the possibility of teaching an online course.

Our program seeks to support students in developing culturally and academically contextualized, inquiry-driven, rhetorically flexible understandings of composing in multiple modes and genres. Our program emphasizes equity-based models of writing pedagogy, peer collaboration, and rhetorical approaches to research and writing. We use directed self-placement, offer supplemental instruction courses, and engage embedded tutoring in partnership with our writing center. We work to assess our curriculum in holistic, critical ways.

Our program supports Methodist’s general education curriculum. The program is housed in our Communication, Composition, and Rhetoric division where we work closely with our communication and media colleagues. We are a small department and work collaboratively to build, design, and implement new curricular initiatives and pedagogical processes.

We are seeking a composition specialist with a strong desire to work in a small, liberal arts context and teach undergraduate courses. The successful candidate will be an engaging, student-centered teacher, who is able to teach across a two-semester composition sequence.

While the primary course load for this position will be FYW, the candidate may also have the opportunity to teach business and technical writing, digital media, rhetorical theory, or an undergraduate qualitative methods course. Other areas of expertise could include one or more of the following areas:

  • writing program assessment and placement processes
  • technical and professional writing, media writing, or communication and media
  • cultural rhetorics

Other responsibilities include scholarship and service/committee work. Committee work will support the FYW program; support professional development efforts for our part-time faculty; and assist with assessment, curriculum development, and building cultures of writing across campus. We also hope to expand course offerings in our Writing minor, and the candidate would be invited to contribute to that effort.

Qualifications
Earned Ph.D. in Composition and Rhetoric or in English with specialization in Composition and Rhetoric/Writing Studies from a regionally accredited university.

Special consideration will be given to:

  • applicants with teaching and scholarly experiences that align with the Methodist University commitment to fostering equity and inclusion in all of our university practices, especially expertise with multilingual students and diverse student populations, (including veterans, active-duty military, and students with diverse home and heritage languages)
  • applicants who have taught in primarily undergraduate institutions/contexts
  • applicants with expertise in writing program administration and assessment

Salary: Commensurate with degree and experience

Application Procedure
Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Completion of the search is dependent upon available funding at the time of hire. Qualified candidates are invited to submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, contact information for three professional references, unofficial transcripts, and a 1-2-page statement of their experiences and commitments to working with a diverse student population and fostering equity and inclusion both within and beyond the classroom.
