Dear GSOLE Members,
We want to welcome you to the start of GSOLE’s seventh annual online conference, which opens today with asynchronous presentations. Synchronous conference events will start soon, stretching across February 1 and 2. Registration is still open with rates that range from $10 for students and contingent or emeritus faculty to $20 for full-time instructors, staff, and administrators. Before jumping into the excellent presentations that you’ll see at this year’s conference, we want to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the conference volunteers. You can view a list of these amazing folks at the bottom of the conference program —please give them a shoutout if you see them in the conference Zoom rooms.
What Can You Expect at This Year’s Conference?
Starting today, you can access asynchronous content, which takes up topics related to online literacy instruction, AI technologies, community building, online writing center practice, and online prison education, among others! In addition to the Praxis Poster presentations, we also have on-demand presentations. These presentations are longer than the Praxis Poster sessions and include opportunities for interaction. As you engage, please add comments with reactions and questions in the section pictured below:
We will want to honor Dr. Michael Greer, who was the founding editor for Research in Online Literacy Education (ROLE). You do not need to be registered for the conference to add your thoughts to our tribute Padlet board. At the opening session, Dr. Heidi Skurat Harris will be sharing her experiences collaborating with Michael as a colleague and friend. We are grateful to Michael for the tremendous work he did for GSOLE and hope to honor his legacy with these spaces for the GSOLE community to gather in his memory.
Starting February 1 at 11:00am U.S. Eastern Standard Time, synchronous activities will begin! This year, we are holding synchronous events over two days, beginning with an opening session by GSOLE President, Dr. Cat Mahaffey and our first plenary speaker, Dr. Beatrice Newman, who will discuss “The O-Files: Searching for Truths, Consistencies, and Innovation in Online Teaching and Learning.” From there, we will host presenters in two Zoom rooms, with GSOLE members sharing their good work in access and inclusion, literacy pedagogy, AI technologies, and professional portfolios.
On February 2, we will continue our synchronous events. At 2:00-3:00pm U.S. Eastern Standard Time, our second plenary speaker, Dr. Sawsan Jaber, will discuss “Unlocking Literacy: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as a Catalyst for Equity and Liberation in Literacy Instruction.” After she presents, we will have two closing sessions: one with GSOLE’s editors to discuss how to transform a conference presentation into a publication and another with GSOLE President Dr. Cat Mahaffey.
We want to thank you for being GSOLE members. GSOLE prides itself on being a welcoming and vibrant online literacy community, and we relish opportunities to gather to celebrate best practices in online and hybrid learning. We hope to see you at our conference this year!
Sincerely,
Amy Cicchino & Tess Evans, GSOLE Conference Committee Chairs
