Apply: Local Chair and Grad Assistant for 2025 RHM Symposium

Good afternoon,

The Rhetoric of Health and Medicine (RHM) Symposium co-chairs invite letters of interest to serve as the local arrangements chair to host the 2025 Symposium. We are also accepting letters of interest from graduate students to serve as a graduate assistant for the 2025 Symposium.

The local arrangements chair would collaborate with co-chairs Colleen Derkatch and Dan Kenzie on a two-day Symposium targeted for fall 2025.

Responsibilities of the local arrangements chair include:

  • Reserving spaces for two concurrent sessions with estimated in-person attendance of 70-90 people

  • Arranging a meal and any social events

  • Identifying accessibility needs and measures and collaborating on an accessibility guide

  • Soliciting funding and support, when possible

  • Collaborating with co-chairs to manage the budget

If more than one local person and/or institution would share these responsibilities, please list these individuals.

In your letter of interest, please include:

  • Your contact information

  • Why you are interested in serving in this role

  • A broad introduction to your institution and location

  • One to three sets of dates you are proposing for a two-day Symposium (we will work with the local chair to finalize date selection.)

  • Estimated costs of travel, lodging, and parking, including assessment of affordability and proximity from an airport

  • Proximity of meeting spaces to lodging and food options

  • Accessibility considerations, whether positive or negative

  • Status of approval by the sponsoring institution/department

  • Description of any local support, such as personnel or potential funding

  • Any state, local, or institutional policies that might limit participation from or be objectionable to certain groups

We are also looking for a graduate student to assist the Symposium co-chairs with the following responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and revising the call for proposals

  • Making announcements on social media, listservs, and other outlets

  • Managing the review process

  • Organizing and finalizing the program

The graduate assistant would not be alone with any of these broader responsibilities. Especially since this position is unpaid, we would work with you to identify specific tasks for you that would be meaningful and equitable. Please send us your CV and a letter of interest that includes your reasons for applying, the strengths or skills you bring to the role, and which of the above responsibilities you are most interested in.

Please submit a CV and letter of interest for and/or questions about either position to Colleen and Dan at rhmsymposium by October 15, 2024. We are more than happy to talk with you or share more information before you apply. Thanks for your attention.

Best,

Dan
