Job: Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor of English: African American and/or African Diasporic Literary Studies

Tenure-Track Assistant/Associate Professor of English: African American and/or African Diasporic Literary Studies

The English Department at Allegheny College invites applications for a specialist in African American and/or African Diasporic Literatures interested in joining a vibrant program dedicated to outstanding undergraduate education in literature and creative writing. Our faculty are active scholars and exemplary teachers, who receive strong institutional support for ongoing professional development, travel, and research. Allegheny College is dedicated to a balanced teacher-scholar model that lies at the core of Liberal Arts colleges.

This is a tenure-track position beginning in August of 2025. Our future colleague will be an active teacher-scholar whose work and professional interests demonstrate an earnest engagement with a diverse world, with a particular emphasis on African American and/or African Diasporic literatures. This person will also be able to teach broadly in American literature. While primary teaching responsibilities will be in the Department of English, we have particular interest in candidates with expertise in race and/or social justice who could contribute to the core curriculum in the interdisciplinary programs of Black Studies or Community and Justice Studies. All Allegheny faculty teach in the college-wide speaking and writing seminars and advise senior projects. The teaching load is 3/3, with course releases earned for Senior Project advising.

Qualifications: Ph.D., a promising record of scholarly engagement in the candidate’s speciality area, and college teaching experience. Strong candidates will demonstrate a commitment to undergraduate education, including pedagogy and experience consistent with diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Please submit a letter of application (addressed to Jennie Votava, Chair of English), CV, and diversity statement (describing how you incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion in your teaching, writing, and/or service), by email to employment. Writing samples and letters of recommendation will be requested at a later date. Applications must be received by October 22, 2024.
