Job Description

MIT anticipates hiring three full-time lecturers to work as writing-in-the-disciplines specialists in the Writing, Rhetoric, and Professional Communication program (WRAP). A thriving program with over thirty lecturers, WRAP collaborates with faculty across MIT to provide communication instruction within communication-intensive subjects in all departments. In addition to technical knowledge, MIT graduates need to know how to analyze audiences and attend to differences in discourse conventions, how to analyze and produce specialized genres and forms of argumentation, and how to compose, evaluate, and integrate oral, written, visual, and digital modes of communication. WRAP researches these concepts and professional practices, develops new pedagogy, and assesses how students learn, apply, and transfer this knowledge.

The lecturers will

1) teach communication within communication-intensive classes primarily in STEM subjects;

2) work with disciplinary faculty and other WRAP lecturers to develop pedagogy, instruction, and assignments that teach the rhetorical principles of written and oral communication;

3) evaluate and respond to student communication assignments in a variety of contexts and provide guidance to faculty and TAs for evaluating and responding to student communication assignments. Additional experience in visual rhetoric is desirable.

One position involves teaching in communication-intensive subjects in mathematics. Please note in your cover letter if you have a background in math.

A full-time teaching load is the equivalent of three classes per term; lecturers typically teach up to four communication modules per term as part of a team of WRAP communication instructors. Salary is commensurate with experience, and MIT offers full benefits for lecturers who work 50% of more of a full-time work schedule. This is a full-time lecturer track position (3-year appointment), with an expected start date of September 1, 2025.

Qualifications

REQUIRED: master’s degree in rhetoric, composition, or technical/professional writing; three years’ teaching experience; experience teaching technical communication, preferably in WAC/WID contexts; comfort with highly technical subject matter and an understanding of the principles of effectively communicating technical material for multiple audiences; and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, TAs, and administrative staff.

PREFERRED: a Ph.D.; familiarity with rhetoric and WAC/WID pedagogy; and experience with assignment design, oral communication instruction, and/or visual rhetoric.

Application Instructions

Applications should consist of a cover letter, a curriculum vitae, and the names of three references.

For questions, please contact WRAP Interim Director Andreas Karatsolis at karatsol.

Deadline to apply is December 31, 2024.
