I want to remind you of our multiple tenure-track openings at SLCC. The English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies Department is comprised of more than 30 tenure-track and tenured faculty members. We have a WAC program, an excellent reading and writing center, a publications center, and a community writing center. SLCC has nearly 50,000 students across multiple campuses and centers on the Wasatch Front. Our department offers a degree in English studies and a degree in Writing Studies.
In particular, we are looking for faculty who can teach in our integrated reading and writing program, our first-year writing program, and in writing studies. We are looking for colleagues who understand the mission and purpose of open-access institutions and who want to be engaged with students, the department, and the college.

The Department of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies (ELWS) at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) seeks to hire active and engaged faculty, skilled in teaching, who embrace the distinct mission of community colleges and the needs of students at open-access institutions. The successful applicant(s) will contribute to the department in several areas including teaching, serving on department, school, and college-wide committees; working in the Student Writing and Reading Center; and participating in professional development activities, including national service and scholarship. The successful applicant will join a vibrant and engaged department where we welcome knowledge-making, writing, and teaching.
Supported by the college’s mission, the SLCC, ELWS department is committed to building a transformative educational environment for students and faculty. Together, our 34 full-time faculty have expertise in several subjects and disciplinary areas, including writing studies, integrated reading and writing; creative writing; literature; cultural studies; and linguistics. The department offers associate’s degree programs in Writing Studies and English Studies, and many of our courses satisfy the institution’s Humanities requirements. We are a dynamic and engaged department with a Student Reading and Writing Center, a Publication Center, a Community Writing Center, a literary magazine, Folio, and a Writing Across the College position. Many of our faculty are involved in regional and national two-year college scholarship and service. We seek teacher-scholars interested in the broad work of literacy instruction at open-access institutions. |
Essential Responsibilities and Duties |
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Teach integrated reading and writing, first-year writing, writing studies, writing studio, intermediate composition, and (with relevant experience) technical writing courses. Teaching writing is the primary assignment.
- Teach literature and theory classes as needed, including American and British literature, queer studies and theory, and women’s literature, among others.
- Teach 15-contact/credit hours per semester, which may include up to three hours in the Student Writing and Reading Center.
- Work with students from diverse backgrounds and literacy practices.
- Assess and maintain records of student performance.
- Maintain regularly scheduled office/consultation hours on campus.
- Serve on department, school, and college-wide committees.
- Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum, assessment, and program development.
- Teach in multiple modalities, including face-to-face, synchronous online (livestream), asynchronous online, or hybrid.
- Exhibit a strong commitment to collegiality with full- and part-time faculty.
- Attend regularly scheduled department meetings and presentations.
- Maintain compliance with the College’s required training.
- Demonstrate a professional commitment to the discipline, department, school, and college mission and values.
- Participate in professional development activities.
- Set and work toward achieving annual personal goals for teaching, professional development, and service.
- Share knowledge and engage with the SLCC community, while contributing to current academic conversations in the field.

Maintains necessary educational credentials, professional skills and demonstrated
teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
b. Solicits feedback and implements suggestions from students and peers when appropriate.
c. Expands knowledge in discipline and teaching craft on an on going basis.
d. Promotes professional development of peers/colleagues through recognized professional
activities (in‐ service activities and the presentation of conference papers and/or publications,
and other methodologies appropriate to the teaching field), as approved by departments.
e. Participates in collegial mentoring relationship, serving as mentor and/or mentee in the department and college.
f. Engages in local, state, and/or national professional organizations appropriate to the faculty role.
g. Serves community partners as content area experts when needed.
h. Completes required training and participates in professional development.
Service to College:
Provides service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and
campus committee assignments; offers adequate service on at least one department, school, or college‐wide committee.
b. Promotes, models and exhibits the College Values with colleagues, students and

Responds to discussions and requests for department work in timely manner (e.g. answers

o. Participates in the formulation and implementation of department initiatives.
p. Evaluates and revises program offerings/materials on an ongoing basis and develops new

q. Participates in strategic planning and monitors the institutional effectiveness and
accountability process.
r. Provides leadership and instructional integrity through classroom observation, mentoring
and evaluation of part‐time employees or serving on tenure sitting committees as needed.
Participates in state‐level issues as requested.
s. Reports maintenance issues for classrooms and equipment to appropriate authorities.
t. Maintains inventory, if appropriate, of equipment, tools, supplies and storage/disposal of
hazardous materials required for classes, and request appropriate equipment repair.
u. Actively participates in the informed budget process.
v. Identifies budgetary needs and priorities within the program as applicable.

Minimum Qualifications |
Minimum Requirements:
- Master’s degree in English, Creative Writing, Writing Studies, Technical and Professional Writing, TESOL or Linguistics, or a closely related field, in hand by date of employment.
- Two years experience teaching in an institution of higher education (graduate or adjunct teaching applicable.

Preferred Qualifications |
Preferred Qualifications:
- Earned doctorate in Writing Studies, Developmental Education, Composition and Rhetoric, TESOL, or related field
- Experience working with college students from diverse social, educational, and linguistic backgrounds.
- Teaching experience and/or relevant graduate coursework in post-secondary reading, developmental writing, integrated reading and writing, co-requisite support, and/or studio teaching A record of experience with teaching-focused professional development activities
- Expertise in culturally responsive pedagogy.
- Experience in designing and teaching courses with innovative practices, such as digital writing, project-based learning, undergraduate research, community engagement, etc.
- Experience with teaching online or hybrid courses
- Knowledge of course and program assessment best practices
- Knowledge of successful pedagogies and curricular design for transitional, first-generation student populations and English language learners
- Knowledge of developmental reading and writing pedagogies
- Knowledge of General Education theory and practice
- Knowledge of adult learning theory
- Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of people, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and abilities.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships across the College.
- The ability to work with all groups; academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds of SLCC students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.
