Hi colleagues!
This summer institute on disinformation led by the Climate Social Science Network might be of interest, particularly to those of us working in the tech and public health spaces. There’s also some potential overlap with this year’s conference theme.
Best!

Subject: [CSSN] call for applications: The Disinformation Summer Institute, UC San Diego, June 3-6, 2025
Greetings,
Applications are now open for the inaugural Disinformation Summer Institute, which is co-sponsored by CSSN. This inaugural 3-day, intensive summer institute is intended for graduate students, post-docs, assistant professors or early career researchers seeking to better understand and address disinformation.
Disinformation is false or misleading information created and spread to advance policy, political, economic or ideological goals. It is sometimes used by industries, governments, and other entities to undermine the public good. It undermines the knowledge institutions crucial to a functioning democracy. A survey of 1500 experts by the World Economic Forum ranked disinformation together with misinformation as a top global risk in the next two years.
The Summer Institute is organized around two goals: to break down barriers between fields of scholarship tackling disinformation and to prepare the next generation of scholars with the interdisciplinary skills necessary to tackle the challenges associated with this topic of study.
The Institute will bring together early career researchers (advanced PhD students postdocs, junior assistant professors) and senior experts to share concepts, techniques, history, and theories useful in the fight against disinformation. Drawing upon quantitative and qualitative social science, history, philosophy of science, public health, data science, and more, each day will combine lectures by experts, group panels, and open discussion. Topics to be covered include: theory of disinformation, research methods, case studies, expert testimony, FOIA requests, archival research, AI, and more.
Apply for the Disinformation Summer Institute taking place this June at the University of California, San Diego. Applications are short and due January 31st, 2025. Applicants will hear back by mid-February. https://disinfoinstitute.org/
There is no fee to attend. The cost of economy travel and lodging will be covered for graduate students and at least partially defrayed for post-docs and assistant professors. Please indicate on the application form what you will need.
We are grateful to the Institute for Practical Ethics at UC San Diego, the Climate Social Science Network at Brown University, and the Center for an Informed Public at the University of Washington for support.
Best,
