This webinar will explore strategies for establishing partnerships between university writing centers, writing projects, colleges of education, and high schools to promote the adoption of writing centers in secondary schools. Participants will discuss effective approaches for demystifying writing center pedagogy and navigating the unique landscape of high school writing center implementation. As a former high school English teacher, I am acutely aware of the need for secondary students to engage in meaningful dialogue with experienced writers regarding their academic and personal writing. Writing centers, when effectively implemented, can fulfill this need. However, the paucity of writing centers in secondary schools, particularly in my region, highlights the need for increased awareness and support for these valuable resources. University writing centers, writing projects, and colleges of education can collaborate to demystify the work of writing centers and facilitate their establishment in high schools.
Michelle Boyd Waters, M.Ed., is the graduate assistant director at the OU Writing Center and is a PhD candidate in instructional leadership and academic curriculum at the University of Oklahoma. She taught middle and high school English Language Arts for 10 years and is now studying the establishment and experiences of writing centers in high schools. Michelle is an Oklahoma Writing Project Teacher Consultant, and co-editor of the Oklahoma English Journal.
