Survey: FYC-instructors’ approaches to linguistic justice

Dear Colleagues,

I hope this message finds you well. My name is Daniel Stefanelli, and I’m conducting a doctoral dissertation study on how first-year composition (FYC) instructors understand and implement linguistic justice pedagogies in their teaching. I’m reaching out to invite your participation and to ask that you share this opportunity with any colleagues who may be interested.

This study aims to explore how FYC instructors engage with linguistic justice—defined here as teaching practices that critically examine language use and challenge standard language ideologies in academic settings. I’m also interested in learning more about the supports and barriers instructors face when enacting these values in their classrooms.

Participation begins with a brief, 10–15 minute demographic survey to determine eligibility and interest in a follow-up interview. You’re eligible if you currently teach (or have taught within the last five years) first-year writing at a U.S. college or university.

Some participants will be invited to take part in a 30-minute Zoom interview, scheduled at their convenience, to discuss their teaching practices and institutional contexts in more depth.

If you’re interested, please complete the short survey here.

Note: Completing the survey does not obligate you to participate in any future study activities, and survey responses will not be published.

If you have any questions or would like more information, feel free to contact me at dstefanelli.

Thank you so much for your time and consideration,

Daniel Stefanelli
