Spartanburg Methodist College is accepting applications for a tenure track position in the English Department. We are looking for someone specializing in Rhetoric and Composition who is willing to serve as the Director of Composition. SMC does not require you to sign an affidavit of faith, nor do we discriminate.
We started offering four year degrees in 2019. Before that, SMC was a community college. This means that so much of what we have here is new, so it’s a very exciting time to be a part of things. Our brand new BA in Professional Writing and Digital Communication includes courses teaching:
Technical Writing
Studies in Nonfiction Writing
Rhetorics of Style and Argument
Rhetoric, Writing, and Digital Media
You will be teaching these courses at some point in the course rotation, and I got to create my own course early on. I’ll be offering it again in the Spring of 2027.
I am the only other Rhetoric and Composition specialist, and I started here in 2021. I have enjoyed being in a collegial department, and I’ve worked with many across the campus on various projects. I earned my PhD in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Teaching of English from the University of Arizona in 2007, and I serve as the Director of the Writing Center at SMC, as well as teach all of the courses listed above.
Spartanburg is a wonderful place to live. Also, we are only thirty minutes from Greenville. We have everything you could want in terms of food, shopping, theater, art, and outdoor life. I can be in the mountains in about an hour or on the beach in about four hours.
If you have any questions, please email Dr. Kristen Welch at welchk. Please do not email me your application.
