Survey: Limited Time Study on AR for SciComm (available until 11/6)

Dear Colleagues,

Earlier this semester, I shared PFAS Kitchen, a resource for those interested in using emerging technologies for science and environmental communication. I am pleased to announce that we have just received IRB approval for a very brief study on the experiences of using this tool. However, we only have one week to get the word out! We would greatly appreciate your help in sharing this study.

Because Adobe Aero will be taken out of Creative Cloud, Apple App Store, and Google Play Store on Nov. 6th, users must download the Adobe Aero application within the next week if they wish to participate. The app will still continue to function (for those with the app downloaded) until Dec. 3 when it will be decommissioned.

Please share this call for participation with students, friends, colleagues, and neighbors who might be interested in the use of augmented reality for risk comm, scicomm, or environmental communication. We are hoping to gather as many responses as possible before the application is discontinued.

About PFAS Kitchen

PFAS Kitchen is a free augmented reality application developed by the DWELL Lab in partnership with the STEEP research group. The experience can be accessed on a mobile device (Android or iOS) through the Adobe Aero app. You can learn about the project and access the experience here: https://doi.org/10.23860/pfas

About the Study / How to Participate

STEEP is seeking users and feedback for our original augmented reality experience, PFAS Kitchen. Take a virtual adventure and learn more about PFAS in your home!

The purpose of this part of the study is to explore the effectiveness of Augmented Reality (AR) technologies in science communication and understanding consumer behavior, specifically about PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Participants will be guided through a pre-survey, augmented reality (AR) experience using Adobe Aero, and a post-survey.

This 30-minute research experience can be accessed at your convenience, in your own space with your personal mobile device. Data will be analyzed by University of Rhode Island Researchers Madison Jones, PhD (principal investigator; madisonjones) and Jaclyn Witterschein (co-investigator, jwitterschein). This research has been approved by The University of Rhode Island Institutional Review Board.

To be eligible, participants must be between the ages of 18 and 80, have access to a personal mobile device, and are physically and cognitively able to navigate online surveys and an augmented reality platform. There are no direct benefits to the participant. Participation will help advance research for educational technology, and increase understanding of knowledge and use of PFAS in the home.

Interested in participating? Read more on the STEEP website.

On behalf of DWELL and STEEP, thanks for considering this request.

Best,

Madison
