Celebrating 20 Years of DMAC

Since its founding in 2006 by Professors Cynthia Selfe and Scott Lloyd DeWitt, DMAC has been dedicated to helping scholars and educators explore new approaches to teaching and writing with digital media. Over the years, the institute has evolved alongside emerging technologies and shifting pedagogical needs, always with the goal of empowering participants to bring meaningful, multimodal practices into their classrooms and programs.

DMAC 2026 will continue this legacy of deep engagement with digital literacy. Participants will work closely with faculty and staff in a collaborative curriculum designed to prepare them to integrate multimodal communication into their home institutions and local communities.

About DMAC

The Digital Media and Composition Institute (DMAC) is an 8-day online institute focused on the effective use of digital media in college composition classrooms. Participants will explore a range of contemporary digital literacy practices, including alphabetic, visual, audio, and multimodal approaches, and apply what they learn to the design of meaningful assignments, syllabi, curricula, or programs.

Our upcoming institute features:

  • World-class faculty in the fields of digital rhetorics, literacy, and composition.
  • Fully online delivery including synchronous sessions addressing current issues in multimodal writing research and pedagogy.
  • Workshops emphasizing production in multimodal writing, curriculum development and assessment, and access and accessibility.
  • A commitment to keeping DMAC affordable and accessible.

The Institute’s curriculum, presentations, and workshops are delivered using a mix of synchronous Zoom events and individual and group workshop time, along with daily interactions with and support from the Institute staff and faculty. DMAC is designed to provide participants with flexibility in how they engage with the curriculum, presentations, and workshops.

Applications for the Cindy & Dickie Selfe DMAC Fellowship are now open!

The Cindy & Dickie Selfe DMAC Fellowship supports diversity and inclusion in the field of digital media and composition studies. We invite applicants from historically marginalized communities, as well as educators who work with these communities. We also invite applications from scholars whose work and scholarly interests address educational and societal inequities within digital media and composition studies. Our goal is to amplify voices that are often unheard in our field and make it possible for individuals to attend DMAC who could not otherwise participate.

The 2026 fellowship amount is $950 and will be applied directly to the tuition fees for the Institute. There is no cost for applying to the fellowship, but please note that, once accepted, fellowship recipients will still be required to pay the $300 registration fee to attend DMAC 2026.

To apply for the Cindy & Dickie Selfe DMAC Fellowship, please write a 1–2 page letter to the DMAC Team that addresses the following questions:

  • What personal and professional goals do you hope to achieve by attending DMAC and how are they related to your current work?
  • How might your participation in DMAC improve the educational environment for colleagues and students at your home institution?
  • How will your participation in DMAC contribute to the diversity of students, teachers, and scholars in the field of digital media and composition studies?
  • What means of funding do you currently have to attend DMAC?

Please submit your application no later than February 2, 2026, using this application form.

If you have any questions about DMAC or the Selfe Fellowship, please reach out to us at DMAC.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!
