Event: Register for 2026 NCTE National African American Read-In Today!

Is your classroom ready for the 2026 NCTE National African American Read-In?

This year, we couldn’t be more excited to welcome Reading Rainbow host and author Mychal Threets at our free National African American Read-In online event on February 12 at 1:00 p.m. ET.

This 45-minute conversation with Mychal will include a reading from his book, I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy, and a positive mental health exercise, plus a Q&A session. Teachers can submit questions on behalf of their classrooms through our website.

And NCTE members: There will also be a special opportunity to receive a free copy of I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy.

This event is free for NCTE members and nonmembers, but registration is required. Visit our website for more details.

What is a Read-In?

For 37 years, during the month of February, NCTE has urged schools, churches, libraries, bookstores, community and professional organizations, and interested citizens to make literacy a significant part of Black History Month by hosting an African American Read-In.

Consider celebrating #AARI26 with these titles—all are winners of NCTE’s 2026 Children’s Book and Poetry Awards.

Are you hosting a Read-In?

Events will be happening all across the country! Hosting an event can be as simple as bringing together friends to share a book or as elaborate as arranging public readings and media presentations that feature professional African American writers. Check out our calendar to register your event or find a Read-In near you!
