CFP: Second Language Writing Group at 2027 CCCC

2026-2027 CCCC Second Language Writing Standing Group Chair: Titcha Ho.

The Second Language Writing Standing Group welcomes proposals to participate in our 2027 Sponsored Workshop at CCCC in Milwaukee, WI, USA. Submit a proposal by Friday, May 1, 2026.

This year’s theme, Design Writing Futures, invites conference participants to “envision a justice-oriented world even amid crisis.” Serving multilingual and translingual students, second-language writing teachers know full well how to design pedagogy and research that “honor multilingual and transnational literacies as intellectual assets rather than deficits” (Sackey, 2026). At our 2026 Business Meeting, we discussed collaboration across settings, including joint programs, graduate programs, FYW, WAC, writing centers, and our writing classrooms, while cultivating and sustaining the knowledge base of second-language writing scholarship for the next generation of scholars and future professors in the field. As we looked toward our future, we also thought about the past, with our roots in pedagogically-focused workshops. Design Writing Futures, the 2027 CCCC conference proposal, invites us to imagine setting the tone for the future of composition, untethered from current political constraints. The SLW SG invites proposals for the following Workshop.

Program format

We invite proposals for interactive roundtable sessions that center around hands-on activities that support specific strategies and practices for advocating for multilingual writers in and beyond our classrooms as teachers, tutors, scholars, and administrators. The sessions should be grounded in research and best practices in SLW.

The activity must include a hands-on deliverable that invites participants to actively apply the concepts, frameworks, or methods introduced during the session. Rather than remaining at the level of discussion, participants will produce a tangible outcome, such as a:

  • Draft assignment,

  • Assessment tool, or

  • Pedagogical activity.

The activity should provide attendees with materials they can easily implement, adapt, or further develop in their teaching, research, or programmatic work in SLW.

Proposals should include a:

  • Brief description of the topic, including relevant scholarship,

  • Overview of the session,

  • Specific description of the activity that participants will engage in, including

    • What participants will do and

    • What the deliverable will be

  • Specific description of what the session will prepare attendees to do (e.g., teach a lesson or revise learning outcomes), and

  • Specific learning objectives for attendees.

Proposals without a clearly articulated hands-on activity will be automatically rejected. While we understand that the conference is a year out and ideas will still be in development, the proposal should indicate proof of concept.

As you prepare for the proposal, you are welcome to explore the following questions:

Whose futures are made visible or invisible in current writing classrooms, and how might pedagogies be redesigned to better support and sustain multilingual students’ diverse literacies and lived experiences?

How might emerging technologies, especially AI-assisted and multilingual tools, reshape multilingual students’ writing practices, identities, and sense of authorship?

How might writing center and writing program administrators redesign their practices, resources, and assessment models to recognize multilingual students’ linguistic repertoires as assets and to support more equitable, inclusive writing futures?

Session format

30-minute roundtable workshop, including discussion, activity, and questions.

Since the Workshop is interactive, facilitators should be able to attend the Workshop in person.

Proposal submission

Proposals should be submitted to the SLW SG CCCC 2027 Workshop Proposal Submission Google Form. Proposals should include a title and description (500 words) of the roundtable, as well as a description of the interactive components (100 words) and deliverable.
