I am very happy to announce an opening for Assistant Director of Student Writing at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. The ideal candidate will have experience working in writing, language, and/or speaking center spaces and a genuine enthusiasm for supporting and mentoring undergraduate students–particularly peer tutors and multilingual writers (proficiency in multiple languages is a plus).
Priority application deadline is May 8th, 2026. We aim to conclude the search by mid-June with a start date of August 17th for this permanent, full-time (academic year, 10-month) staff position. The timeline is brisk, but the role–and place–are worth a fast turnaround. And summer in Maine is a perfect time to transition here! Bates has excellent benefits and the salary is competitive. Initial application is just a Cover Letter and resume/CV; references come later in the process.
For context: Bates is a small, liberal arts college dedicated to the transformative power of our differences, informed civic action, local community engagement, and responsible stewardship of the wider world. Our newly redesigned Student Writing & Language Center–and new speaking studios–live within a vibrant, centralized Peer Learning Commons where 120+ undergraduate tutors work and learn together with their peers. Bates has a long history of valuing writing across the curriculum and in the disciplines, and Faculty Governance recently approved a new General Education concentration in Global Languages!
