Survey: how writing center tutors identify and respond to AI-generated writing

Dear writing center directors,

I am a PhD candidate in Composition and Applied Linguistics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and I am conducting an IRB-approved study examining how writing center tutors identify and respond to AI-generated student writing. The study seeks to understand how tutors approach AI-related questions and what kinds of support or training might be helpful.

If you’re interested, you may forward the invitation and survey link below to your tutors. The survey is 10-15 minutes and is anonymous:

Have you ever read a student’s paper and wondered, "Did they write this…or did a robot?" As AI becomes increasingly common in academic settings, tutors are facing new challenges in identifying and responding to AI-generated writing.

THE PROBLEM

Writing centers are at the front lines of navigating AI use in student work, yet tutors often receive little guidance on how to recognize AI-generated text and how to respond when they suspect it. With LLM use becoming widespread, we need a clearer picture of how tutors are interpreting these texts and what cues they rely on to identify them.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

For my IRB-approved research study, I am collecting writing center tutors’ perspectives on recognizing and evaluating AI-generated writing. Your insights will help us better understand how tutors make these judgements and what kinds of support or training might be needed going forward.

The study involves a brief online survey that takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete. The survey is anonymous, and you may stop at any time.
