CFP: REMINDER! Proposals for CCCC 2027 Writing Assessment SIG Roundtable due 5/1

Hi all,

Just a quick reminder that proposals for the CCCC 2027 roundtable organized by the Writing Assessment SIG are due this Friday, 5/1. You can find the CFP below.

Keeping Writing Assessment Human: Perspectives on Resisting AI in Writing Assessment Practices

The Writing Assessment Special Interest Group invites you to submit a proposal for our “sponsored” roundtable at CCCC 2027 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This roundtable will highlight perspectives on resisting AI in writing assessment and strategies for keeping humans at the center of our work. We write this in consideration of the recent “Statement on AI and Assessment” released from the Modern Language Association, which argues that: “Communication, education, and assessment are human-centered activities, conducted for human-centered purposes.” We invite this roundtable as a way to develop this conversation at the Conference on College Composition and Communication and forward the humanity of writing assessment.

We welcome perspectives that include but are not limited to the following:

  • Centering humans in feedback loops
  • Building policy around the use of AI in writing assessment
  • Resisting automation of writing placement or other large-scale writing assessment contexts
  • Leveraging programmatic assessment to resist AI in writing instruction
  • Using alternative assessment practices to support resistance of AI
  • Resisting arguments about labor as justification for automating writing assessment
  • Other topics related to writing assessment and resisting AI

For transparency, as the Writing Assessment SIG is a special interest group and not a standing group, we do not have a guaranteed panel at CCCC 2027. Additionally, this means that because of the CCCC No Multiple Speaking Roles Policy, participation as a speaker on this panel will count as a speaking role and will therefore limit your ability to take on additional speaking roles at the conference. However, if you’re looking for a low-stakes way to get to the conference, this might be a good option.

Proposals should include:

  • A 100-150 word description of your intended focus along
  • Your name and institutional affiliation;
  • The contact information you use for the CCCC proposal system.

Proposals, and/or any questions, can be emailed to Stacy Wittstock (stacy.wittstock) and Jennifer Burke Reifman (jburkereifman) by May 1st, 2026.
