Building a Reflective Pedagogical Praxis: Generating Slow, Intentional Approaches to GenAI Literacies

The proliferation of generative AI (genAI) platforms has become an enduring concern for instructors of technical and professional communication (TPC), user experience, and communication design. This workshop asks attendees to engage in reflective, reflexive, and justice-centered discussions to help craft slow genAI pedagogies. Our approach is influenced by articulations of slow pedagogy and its connections to decolonial, indigenous practices (Leddy & Miller, 2024), and the genAI refusal movement (Sano-Franchini et al., 2024), which emphasize the intentionality of our actions and the harms caused by genAI. Though not always supported through institutional policies or instructors’ heavy teaching loads, slowing down offers a much-needed counter to the fast-paced, break-neck speeds of genAI development. It allows us time to participate in reflection and intentionality as core teaching practices that support critical, justice-centered instruction. This workshop provides attendees with dedicated time to slow down and accomplish three key objectives in building a genAI pedagogical praxis:
- Examine pedagogical attitudes and values that inform how they teach with or without genAI
- Share activities, assignments, or policies used in their own teaching with or about genAI; ideate on how critical awareness of genAI’s oppressive dimensions can translate into teaching practices
- Analyze departmental and institutional contexts to identify resources or support needed for cultivating their pedagogical praxis; join a community of instructors offering mutually-beneficial, slow pedagogical support
