Here’s a brief description of the award and evaluation criteria:

The Diana Hacker TYCA Outstanding Programs in English Award is sponsored by the Two-Year College English Association (TYCA) of NCTE and Bedford/St. Martin’s. The award is given annually and honors two-year college teachers and their institutions for exemplary programs in English studies and its related disciplines. These programs enhance students’ language learning and help them achieve their college, career, and personal goals by engaging with one or more areas of program activity: curriculum, faculty development, and assessment.

Program applications will be evaluated using the following criteria:

  • Attention to the three areas of program activity: curriculum, faculty development, and assessment. Not all applications will necessarily attend to each area equally, but the best programmatic initiatives understand how these areas are related and can account for their relationships.
  • Responsiveness to current exigencies, such as local, national, and disciplinary trends and conversations.
  • Innovation, including novel strategies and tactics for addressing exigencies and programmatic issues.
  • Evidence of the initiative’s success. Success can be measured in different ways and may include a variety of different kinds of evidence depending on the initiative.
  • Details about the scope and impact of the program, including information about various aspects of the programmatic initiative and key stakeholders, such as participants who support the initiative and populations served by the program.
