The English Department at Kingsborough Community College, of the City University of New York, a vibrant educational and scholarly community, seeks a full-time specialist in composition & rhetoric/writing studies at the Lecturer rank.
Founded in 1963 as part of the City University of New York (CUNY), Kingsborough Community College remains firmly committed to its mission of providing both liberal arts and career education, promoting student learning and development, and strengthening and serving its diverse community. Kingsborough serves a population of approximatedly 14,000 students and consistently ranks among the leading community colleges in the country in associate degrees awarded to minoritized students. Kingsborough has been named one of the leading community colleges in the country by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. It has earned national recognition for its creative and effective use of learning communities, for the large number of degrees it confers, for the high percentage of graduates who continue their studies, and for the innovative programs that draw thousands of non-traditional students to its campus every year. Located on the beach in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn, Kingsborough offers a spacious, tree-filled campus-rare in the CUNY system.
Candidates will teach integrated reading-writing courses in the first-year composition sequence (including co-requisite courses) and other electives, as needed. Evidence of on-going scholarly interest and activity in writing studies fields are required, as well as an ability to work collaboratively with others in a large, active department. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to engage in committee and department assignments, which might include administrative, supervisory, and other functions.
The successful candidate will join a warm, collegial English department that teaches composition, literature, creative writing, and ESL courses. Our department will welcome two new concentrations in KCC’s liberal arts degree in fall 2024 – Literacy Studies, and Creative Writing. While we do not currently offer any technical or professional writing courses, we are keen to design new courses in these areas.
Lecturer positions carry a 24-hour course load per academic year, which can be divided across 3 terms; fall, winter and spring. Lecturers in the CUNY system are eligible for a tenure equivalent – Certificate of Continuous Employment – after 6 years, which confers a level of stability and commitment often lacking in other systems.
