Hello All:
Please pass this AmeriCorps opportunity to any current or past student you think might be interested. I’m involved with a nonprofit in Palmer, Alaska called the Bright Lights Book Project. What we do is salvage books destined for the landfill or recycling center give them away free to appreciative readers. We currently stock 35 bookcases that are located in area businesses, government buildings, and Palmer and Wasilla schools. Recipients include those of all ages, genders, and reading levels, with a focus on providing books to children and young adults. We also ship books to rural villages located off the road system where access to books can be both limited and expensive. Currently we’re working through a $25K earmark sponsored by Lisa Murkowski’s office to ship books to villages and attend a few book/reading fairs. Over the past couple of years, we gave away 40,000 books each year. The assigned VISTA member will assist us in building and enhancing program capacity in the following ways: Grant writing, volunteer coordination, outreach and grant management for our Books to Villages Program, computer program set up and training, publicity and social media. Members of the BLBP Board have extensive grant writing and nonprofit experience to ensure personal and professional growth throughout the service year.
