Job: Adjunct Faculty for Asynchronous Online 1-Credit Course at UMB

The larger program I teach in, the asynchronous online Master of Science in Health Science (MSHS) in the School of Graduate Studies at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), is hiring adjunct faculty instructors for sections of an 8-week course called MSH 600 – Introduction to Library Research & Scholarly Writing. In this role, adjunct faculty will teach one or more sections of an 8-week asynchronous online course. The expectation is that faculty will teach this same course(s) at the same time annually if available. MHS 600 is offered during the summer session (typically running for eight weeks from early June to late July) and the first part of the fall semester, Fall A (typically running for eight weeks from late August to mid-October). Summer 2025 will run from June 2 to July 25, and Fall A from August 25 to October 17. Each course section accommodates up to 20 students.

Compensation is $1,800 to $2,000 per credit, based on previous experiences. Maryland, DC, Virginia, or Delaware residents preferred. Residents from other states may not qualify. Position Overview

We are looking for adjunct faculty to teach the 8-week 1-credit asynchronous online course MHS 600 – Introduction to Library Resources & Scholarly Writing in the online Master of Science in Health Science program. In this role, you will teach one or more sections of an 8-week online course in the program. The expectation is that you will teach this same course(s) at the same time annually. MHS 600 is offered during the summer session (typically running for eight weeks from early June to late July) and the first part of the fall semester, Fall A (typically running for eight weeks from late August to mid-October). Summer 2025 will run from June 2 to July 25, and Fall A from August 25 to October 17. Each course section accommodates up to 20 students.

MHS 600 is a required introductory course for two online asynchronous programs: Master of Science in Health Science (MSHS) and the Master of Science in Global Health (MSGH). A large part of the summer cohort in the MSHS program comes from UMB’s Physician Assistant (PA) Program. The course has a fully developed curriculum and assignments that are reviewed every year. A faculty member from UMB’s Health Science and Human Services Library (HSHSL) is also involved in this course. The course is designed to provide graduate learners the opportunity to develop skills in both accessing relevant online library resources and engaging in scholarly writing. The portions of the course focusing on library resources teach and strengthen lifelong research and information competency skills by introducing students to the nature of research and the role of the library in the research process. The scholarly writing portion of the course emphasizes organization, effective conveyance of thoughts through written words, and synthesizing research literature.

Course learning outcomes for students are to:

  • Utilize the HSHSL website to locate library resources and use the internet as a research tool.
  • Integrate the core concepts of information retrieval for finding, evaluating, analyzing, organizing, and presenting information.
  • Exercise critical thinking to evaluate information.
  • Develop a sustainable writing process that includes prewriting, drafting, and revision strategies.
  • Create unified texts that engage and inform their intended audience.
  • Develop, evaluate, and improve academic writing skills.
  • Apply format and citation guidelines based on style guides appropriate for the field.

The UMB School of Graduate Studies appoints adjuncts for the academic year on a non-tenured track. Rules governing such appointments are located at https://graduate.umaryland.edu/policies/ .

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an adjunct faculty in the Master of Science in Health Science program, which includes teaching contributing to the development and refinement of the course curriculum and delivery.
  • Teach one or more sessions of the 8-week online course MHS 600 based on a previously designed curriculum, complete with assignments, activities, course materials, and assessment guidelines.
  • Meet online with the course manager for an orientation to the curriculum and assessment practices and approach.
  • Participate in regular meetings with course manager and library faculty throughout the duration of the course.
  • Provide a learning environment and instructor presence that supports student success.
  • Provide timely responses to students, the program director, and other school officials.
  • Maintain and submit accurate and timely reports for student grades/progress.
  • Enforce student conduct policies as outlined in the University Catalog.
  • Remain current with trends, techniques, and advances in online learning.

Qualifications

  • Earned a Masters, PhD, or other doctorate degree in Rhetoric & Composition, English, or related fields in the humanities, social sciences, and STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine).
  • Minimum of two years instructional experience with writing assessment and instruction in higher education is required. Online teaching experience and experience with teaching writing in the health sciences preferred.
  • Extensive experience, training, and expertise in monitoring and evaluation.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a remote environment with minimal supervision.

Compensation:

Adjunct faculty positions are compensated on a course-by-course basis. Rates per credit are between $1,800-$2,000, depending on experience and background. Adjuncts are not eligible for benefits and are contractual. A background check is required for employment and may include licensure/certification verification.
