Linguistically and Internationally Oriented Standing Groups’ Statement on the De-Chartering of CCCC
The leaders of the Standing Groups of the Conference on College Composition and Communication related to multilingual, transnational language and literacy teaching and research, including beyond US borders, stand in solidarity with one another in light of the decision by the National Council of Teachers of English to de-charter our shared organization. We regard this decision and its presented rationale as a direct affront to the democratic global citizenship that we esteem as language and literacy teacher-scholars. We seek to utilize the conditions caused by de-chartering as an opportunity to state plainly our shared and diverse commitments to foregrounding multilingual, transnational, translingual, and international writing research and education. We advocate for these as core aspects of our field and of any new organization. We reaffirm our commitment to pursuing social and linguistic justice through teaching and research. We welcome all who share our goals, regardless of previous affiliation or disciplinary, linguistic, national, or cultural backgrounds. We are grateful to like-minded conferences that have offered spaces to collaboratively and considerately envision our new professional home. As we envision our next steps, we are sure that any new organization must include these priorities from the beginning, as they are foundational to establishing a new future.
