Survey: Talking STEAM: Addressing Gaps in Composition Accessibility Practices for Black Students Within the WAC Classroom

Dear Faculty and Administrators,

My name is Courtney Crisp, and I am a doctoral candidate in the Rhetoric and Composition program at Ball State University. I am writing to let you know about an opportunity to participate in a study, Talking STEAM: Addressing Gaps in Composition Accessibility Practices for Black Students Within the WAC Classroom (IRB-FY2026-484). I am conducting a research study examining accessibility measures within WAC programming that impact Black student success in STEM discourse and communication learning, and you are invited to participate in the study. If you agree, you will participate in a 25-minute survey that asks questions regarding professional development opportunities and personal perceptions regarding the use of anti-racism, critical race theory, and linguistic justice within your institution, department, and program. There will also be an opportunity to enter a research subject incentive raffle for gift cards totaling $100, $75, and $50. The link to the Qualtrics survey:

The inclusion/exclusion criteria are as follows:

• between the ages of 18-80
• currently hold a teaching or administrative (director, assistant director) position within a Writing Across the Curriculum program in a college or university located in the United States
  • Participants currently holding an administrative position must also have held a teaching position within the same institutional WAC program within the past 5 years.

This study is approved by the BSU IRB (IRB-FY2026-484).
